Coffee: Four Facts You Might Not Know About

By Debrah Elliot

When you see statistics telling you that about 400 billion cups of coffee are being enjoyed by people worldwide every year, you can't possibly claim that it is not one of the most popular drinks. Since the first coffee house opened its doors in Constantinople around 1475, coffee shops have sprung up around the globe and pretty much seem to be located on every street corner. If you want more interesting facts, then maybe you should keep reading.

Historically, the story about its discovery was caused by some Ethiopian farmers' curiosity. Having found goats eating some berries and noticing that they seem to be with more energy than the usual, the farmers then tried the berries themselves. This gave birth to "coffee-eating" throughout Africa. Tribesmen mixed the berries with fat and consumed the mixture as they did with their regular food in the hope of having a much higher energy level.

Even when we believe that coffee berries contain caffeine for the very reason that they serve to give those who ingest it with extra energy, this is not its sole purpose. It is the caffeine found in the berries that also attract the bees which consequently help in the pollination of the coffee plant. It is also great at driving away slugs and some crop-destroying animals in that caffeine is toxic to them. With that, caffeine is able to protect coffee from possible harm.

Those who find it relevant for them to watch what they are ingesting especially if it has something to do with calories, coffee can be good for you as it comes with an almost zero amount of it, only a small hint of fat. Any cup of regular filtered brewed coffee has only half a percent of fat. Espressos though contain 2.5% of fat, but it's still a rather small amount.

Do you know that Theodore Roosevelt was known to consume a gallon of coffee daily? And French writer Voltaire is such a heavy drinker of coffee too that he drank 50 cups every single day. This of course is not something that is being recommended that you do because doing so may be dangerous to the point of it even being psychoactive. Note that caffeine in really high amounts when consumed is truly fatal. Just so you know, to consume a hundred cups of caffeine would mean death so it is not being encouraged. On a more positive note though, coffee consumed at a safe level comes with antioxidants which could give you health benefits.
